iPad Improves Communication Skills of Children with Autism –Study

August 2, 2013—Good news for parents of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD): researchers have found a way to help you and your child communicate better, using iPod Touch or the iPad tablet.

A research done in Toronto, Canada, with 12 children with ASD showed that these mobile touch devices made a statistically significant improvement on the children's communication skills. Specifically, the children displayed improved attention span, greater motivation, and increased social interaction.

The most marked improvements were seen among nonverbal children with severe autism.

The study was presented by Rhonda McEwen, PhD, to the American Psychological Association in a session titled “Windows of Communication Through Mobile Applications for Children With Autism.”
